A few months ago I had lunch with a friend at Moe’s. We ordered our lunch, sat down, and had some small talk. Then came the expected question: “How are you?” At this point I always struggle with how to answer. If I’m having a hard day, do I smile and say, “I’m fine” or do I take a risk and choose to be honest? That day, which was a hard day, I took the risk and chose to be honest.
“I’m living broken,” I said.
We all have seasons in our lives where we are living broken. Our hearts are broken but life goes on, and we must continue to go on with it. Our hearts are broken by losing loved ones, strained marriages, wayward children, and health challenges.
You can’t candy-coat broken. Broken is broken. And so we find ourselves living broken.
In a Christian culture, it is hard to live broken. We are supposed to be victorious, triumphant, and overcoming, but Lord help us, at the moment, we’re broken. We know that in time healing will come, but sometimes it is a slow process, so in the interim, we live broken.
In Exodus 15:26, God describes Himself as Jehovah Rapha, the Lord our Healer. I have always loved the Hebrew word, “Rapha.” Its root word means, “to mend by stitching.”
I like to think of God with His large sewing needle, stitching up our broken hearts and making us whole again. He says that is who He is. So that is what He does.
He stitches up your broken heart after your father dies.
He heals your broken heart when you are laid off.
He heals your broken heart when your child is lost in the world.
He heals your broken heart over the best friend that deserted you.
He heals your broken heart over your child’s disability.
He heals your broken heart when you marriage ends in divorce.
He heals your broken heart when you son is incarcerated.
He heals your broken heart as you walk through cancer treatment.
He heals your broken heart that is anxious or depressed.
Even now, as you are living broken, God is actively stitching your heart back together so that you can be whole again.
It takes time, but it is happening, whether you can feel it or not. One day your heart will be whole again.
Isaiah 61:1-3, which describes Jesus, says,
“He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted…
To comfort all who mourn, & provide for those who grieve in Zion
to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
the oil of joy instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.”
Jesus will bind up our broken hearts.
He will comfort us.
He will gives exchange our ashes for a crown of beauty.
He will take our mourning and give us joy.
He will replace our spirit of despair with a garment of praise.
He will heal your heart. Trust in Him and wait patiently. Don’t lose hope.
There will come a day when you are no longer living broken, but fully living.
Jesus promises.
“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
John 10:10b
