I stood with my eyes open during praise and worship and watched everything going on around me. I should have been focused on God and singing with joy, but my mind was distracted by the women around me. They were hugging on each other, prophesying over each other, and down on the floor in tears together. And I was standing there, alone, with really no desire to be doing any of those things at that moment.
Which is a problem since I am the Ladies Ministry Leader at my church.
I’ve been in this position for over four years now. It was not a leadership position that I ever thought I would be doing. I was quite surprised when the opportunity was presented to me. I thought, “Who, me? Why me? I don’t have what it takes to do this!” But other leaders in my church confirmed that I was “the one” to lead our ladies ministry in this season. It is an honor for me to serve my church in this way and to be in this position.
Yet even after leading successful outreaches, socials, Bible studies, corporate gatherings and small groups for over four years, I still feel unqualified. Surely someone else could lead this ministry better than me. In many ways, I still have no clue what I am doing.
Can you relate?
Are you struggling through raising 5 little children?
Do you ever feel unqualified for what God has asked you to do?
Do you feel ill-equipped to share the gospel with a stranger?
Are you unable to share your testimony at the front of the church?
Are you unsure if you will be able to succeed in college?
Are you afraid to use your musical talent because it is not perfected yet?
Are you terrified of going to the pastor with your idea for a new program?
Do you feel “less than” all of your coworkers?
Do you struggle to raise your special needs child?
Yeah, me too. I feel unqualified. Surely there is someone that could do this job better than I can. There are other women who are more touchy-feely, more compassionate, and more willing to get out of their jammy pants and serve. But God chose me. Just like He chose you.
God has a track record of choosing the unqualified and the ill-equipped. He chose Abraham the failthless, Gideon the scared, David the adulterer, Moses the stutterer, and Peter the impulsive. If we are unqualified, we are in good company.
If God chose us, it is because we are the right person for the job in this season. There may be others who can do it better than us. But God didn’t choose them. He chose us. Which means that He has full confidence in us and He wants us to trust Him and serve.
Those who God calls, He equips. Abraham grew in faith, Gideon became a victorious warrior, David learned to love God with all his heart, Moses led the Israelites into the promised land, and Peter planted the early church.
None of them did it perfectly but they were obedient. They answered God’s call on their lives. They chose to place their faith in God and serve Him. They trusted Him with the outcome.
You and I may not the best person suited for the job, but we are the ones that God has asked to do the job for right now. God will equip us and give us everything that we need to do what He has called us to do.
Smith Wigglesworth, the famous British Evangelist, said it this way, “God does not call those who are equipped, He equips those whom He has called.”
So let’s choose to answer God’s call and obey and serve while we trust that God knows what He is doing. God has chosen us and He will equip us, even if it seems like someone else can do it better.
