“I AM A WRITER!” The words came flying out of my mouth and took me by surprise. I was taking my morning walk and talking with God in the cool of the day and bloop! Out popped those words. “Me? A writer?” I questioned. I might as well have said that I was a fireman or a fisherman or a pro basketball player.
Well, why not a writer? I write, don’t I?
But the thing is, I’ve always said that I wasn’t good at writing. I am more the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) girl. In high school, I excelled in Calculus and Physics and Chemistry but struggled in English. Like, the worst grade that I made in high school was in English. The math and science concepts gelled in my mind like flies to flypaper but words and grammar and poetry always alluded me. They still do. Seriously.
Don’t ask me to analyze a poem. I’d rather have five root canals without novocaine.
Isn’t it just like God to call you to do the very things that you said that you weren’t any good at? I can just see Gideon, trembling behind the wine press, but God calls him a mighty warrior. And then there is Moses, who had a speech impediment, and God names him His corporate spokesman. Even Jesus asked Peter, who had denied him three times, to feed His sheep.
When God sees us, He does not see our weakness. He sees the opportunity for His strength to shine through us.
God does not need gifted and talented men and women to do the work of His Kingdom. What God really needs and longs for is yielded and submitted vessels. God can use a humble woman with a tenth grade education but He is unable to use a stiff-necked woman with a Harvard law degree. Which are you?
If you are yielded and submitted, God can use you no matter what your skills are.
God delights in taking the foolish things of this world to confound the wise (1 Corinthians 1:27). Are you like David, the youngest of many brothers, sent out in the fields to tend the sheep? He wasn’t even invited to the meeting with the prophet Samuel, but God had already chosen him to be king. God saw His potential but most importantly He saw David’s heart that was was beating after His own.
You may be stuck in a dead-end job but God already knows of your promotion. You may be up to your knees in diapers and feel so alone but God sees your potential. You may be struggling to figure out what God created you to do but God is excited over the good plans He has for you.
Are there things that you said you were not good at that God has called you to do? It is a scary place to be, but lean on Him and His strength will shine in your weakness. Isn’t that what we want anyway, to bring glory to God and not to ourselves?
Step out in faith in that area where God has called you but you have declared is not your gift. Peter’s gift wasn’t walking on water, but when Jesus said, “Come!” Peter got out of the boat and walked (Matthew 14:29). Let’s do the same. Let’s get out of the boat, and walk on water.
What about you? Is there an area where God has called you to serve, in your family, workplace, church, or community, where you feel inadequate? Let me know. I would love to pray for you.
